Abstract : The present study was carried out to detect the IgG antibody to type I collagen in both serum and GCF of patients with RPP and to find out the relationship between its level and the activity of the diseases. This study included 30 subjects, were classified into three groups: Group I: 10 healthy control. Group II: 10 patients with active RPP. Group III: 10 patients with inactive RPP. Group II, III were selected according to the criteria of Pag et al (1983). The level of the antibody IgG to collagen type I was determined by using an-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)according to Gosslaw and Barrah. The results of the present study revealed that the level of the IgG antibody to collagen type I in both GCF and serum in active RPP was significantly higher than those inactive RPPand in control group. Also the level of the auto-antibody was higher in serum than in the GCF in all the subjects. From the results we can conclude that there is increase in the auto- antigen to collagen type I in RPP which may suggest its role in tissue destruction in the disease and its interaction with the activity of the disease helps us to understand the rapid and sever destruction of the periodontium in the active RPP.
