ARTHROTOMOGRAPHY IN THE EVALUATION OF INTERNAL DERANGEMENT OF THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

Document Language : English
Abstract : Internal derangement (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a common disorder affecting about 28 to 40 % of the adult population under the age of 40 years. Internal derangement has been described as an anterior disc displacement with or without reduction. The present study was con¬ducted to evaluate the role of arthrotomography in the diagnosis of ID of the TMJ. Twenty adult patients between 16 - 40 years of age suffer from clinical manifestations of TMJ pain, TMJ clicking, deviation of mouth opening and tender muscles of mastication. The results of this study indicated that arthrotomography was very helpful together with the his¬tory and clinical examination for the diagnosis of ID with or without perforation of the disc as well as in recording the dynamics of TMJ.
