In recentyears, health workers have shown a growing interest in the heavy users
of medicalcare. Of the heavy users of health services,Zook and Moore considered
thosepatientswith prolonged hospitalization and patients with repeated hospitalization
forthe same disease, defined as more than one admission falling in the same
diagnosticclassificationJ 1)
Lifetable is a set of statistics used to estimate probabilitiesassociated with the
of an event during a certain period of time.(2) This event may be death,
issionto hospital, coronary heart attack, and so on.(3) Life table method has
'fically been applied to psychiatric illnesses as they are chronic diseases
cterizedby multiple spells of hospital admission.(~,5) In such illnesses, it is
rtant to determinenot only the probability of recovery within specified interval
firstdiagnosisor admission to care, but also the probability of recurrence or
issionparticularlyin relation to the duration of first episode.( 6 )
Studiesof psychiatricrecidivismhave generally reported discouraging results, up
50%ofdischargedpatientsbeing rehospitalized within a year after discharge.(7,8)
astudyof psychiatricpatients admitted for hospitalization in Jerusalem, it was found
the median length of stay for first admitted patients was 51.5 days and twelve
IthSafteradmission,8.2% of patients still remained hospitalised. (9)
Factors that have influnced patterns of chronicity and readmission among
'atricpatientsin the past and presentwillcontinueto do so in moreor lessthe
mannerin the future. Both lifetabletechniquesandtimeseriesanalysiscan
ifyandisolatesuchinfluencingfactors for predictive (forcasting) purposes as well
