Abstract : This study utilized surgical technique to achieve root coverage using the traditional connective tissue graft (CTG) and an acellular dermal matrix graft (Alloderm). Twenty six sites with isolated mucogingival defects were included in the study. The root surface was thoroughly scaled and the graft was adapted to cover the recession site extending from the alveoler bone to the cementoename1 junction. Connective tissue graft was harvested from the palatal mucosa in thirteen sites while the other sites received Alloderm. After six months the mean percentage of root coverage was 55% in Alloderm sites and 50% in CTG sites. An increase in the width of keratinized gingiva was achieved with both grafts. Statistical analysis revealed insignificant difference between Alloderm and CTG with respect to pocket depth reduction, gain in clinical attachment level, percentage of root coverage and increased width of keratinized gingiva. These findings show that Alloderm might represent an alternative modality for management of mucogingival defects since second surgical procedure is excluded.
